The deep book

The matching room most people mean when they say “the exchange.” Flutter’s Betfair desk is where Saturday’s main markets usually have people on both sides — and where a US passport typically stops at the door.

How it works

You back or lay a price on a ladder. Another customer has to take the other side. Betfair matches the two of you; it does not book the position the way a sportsbook does.

The product sits next to a Betfair sportsbook and casino in markets where Flutter offers those. Those are different tickets. This review is about the Exchange.

Flutter’s own brand page still calls Betfair the first and biggest betting exchange. Depth is the reason people keep an account here even when another desk advertises a cheaper headline cut.

Commission, dated

As of September 2026

Betfair’s own help centre describes commission on net winnings in a market — not on a losing ticket — using a market base rate and any discount that applies to the account.

The operator’s formula, in their words, is net winnings × market base rate × (100% − discount rate). Lose the market and you typically owe no commission on it.

We do not reprint a live percentage here. Base rates have moved by sport and by market over the years, and discounts are account-specific. The number on Betfair’s own commission screen is the one that counts.

A cheap-looking rival fee still loses if this is the only book that will fill the stake you meant to put on.

Liquidity and geography

On the big UK and Irish football and racing slates, this is still the deepest consumer exchange most people will ever see. That is editorial judgement from how the room has traded for two decades — not a volume figure we invented.

Leave the main leagues and the book thins, same as anywhere. A price on the board is only useful if someone will take it.

Licensed homes are the UK and a short list of other regulated markets Flutter actually serves. Availability is residence- and location-specific. Read Betfair’s own country and terms pages before you assume you can open an account.

Who it is for

People who care more about getting matched on a Saturday 3pm card than about a prettier ticket or a lower published cut.

Anyone learning the ladder: the book is deep enough that back and lay are usually both visible on the main markets.

Not for US residents. Flutter will sell you FanDuel in licensed US states. That is not this product.

Comparison only

Put this desk next to Smarkets or Matchbook only if you are actually eligible for those rooms too.

Compare the price you can match, the commission on a winning market, and the limit that applies to your stake — together, not as three separate brag lines.

We do not rank a “best exchange.” We describe the room.

We do not run an exchange, hold funds, or take a cut from Betfair Exchange. If their screen, fee table, or licence page disagrees with a sentence here, their screen is right. No bonuses. No “claim” button.
